Start with the evening’s needs
Do not ask first, “which place is best?”. Ask, “what do we need tonight?”. If the toilet cassette is full, the battery low or the water finished, service matters more than the view. If everything is sorted, location, calm and tomorrow’s distance can weigh more heavily.
A good motorhome stopover for one night can be a poor place for three days. A simple harbour car park can be perfect when passing through, while a campsite with shower and laundry can be better in the middle of the holiday.
Check three things before you trust the place
First: may you actually stay overnight there? Many places look like motorhome stopovers but are really car parks with local rules. Others are seasonal and may be closed for large parts of the year.
Then: is the stated service available? Electricity, water and chemical toilet disposal are the three functions that most often decide whether the stop works in practice. An unclear map entry should be treated as a clue, not a promise.
Think route, not only place
The best place is often where the day’s driving naturally wants to end. A stop 20 minutes before the destination can be better than a popular alternative that requires a detour, stress or late arrival.
It is worth planning a first-choice place and a backup. That makes the trip calmer, especially in high season along the coast, at events or near larger towns and cities.
